Community Outreach

One Life Food Pantry, a partner agency of the Clark County Food Bank, has been serving Clark County residents for more than two decades. All are warmly welcomed at the shopping style pantry which is open on Saturday mornings from 8:30 to 10:30.

Executive Director Andrea Clark oversees the work of a large group of dedicated (and long-time) volunteers. I’ve been a volunteer with One Life for a little less than two years; I enjoy checking in the clients and assisting with Spanish interpretation as needed. This year, I arranged for One Life to receive the hats and dish cloths made by our amazing FVKG knitters and crocheters. The dish cloths were a welcome gift placed in each of the Christmas boxes.

As winter has settled in, the hats have understandably been very popular with our clients. Many thanks to all the knitters and crocheters for bringing so much joy (and warmth) to our friends at One Life Food Pantry. Please enjoy the attached pictures of some happy hat recipients! My favorite is the blurry little boy in the plaid coat. He's blurry because he was so excited about his hat that he couldn't stop dancing around, telling his father "Mira, Papi" (Look, Daddy!)

Charity Knitting

Charity1

Market Bags

A new charity project of knitted or crocheted market bags for the food bank. Geri Baer has supplies and patterns for members. Bags are due at the June meeting.

Additionally, I thought members might be interested in

charity projects completed by long-time FVKG yarn donors,

Roberta and Janis Rink. We cannot thank them enough for

their generous donations through the years.

And finally: The hat machine!

Join us in March to get a fresh start on charity knitting.

Learn how to use the hat machine. We will have two going at the March meeting for people

to bring their worsted weight yarns to crank a hat and to feel qualified to use the machine

for rent.

Learn what yarns are best for the machine (no mohair please). Win a chance to use the

machine for a month.

Gnome Matter What

While stumbling through the discount fabric store that isn't Walmart, I managed to pass by the book rack.
Not on purpose, I assure you since I already have enough books to stock a small-town library. On the bottom
shelf I spotted...wait for it...a book called The Gnomes of Grimblewood by Sarah Schira. This is a collection of
knitted gnomes that just tickled my fancy. (My fancy is old enough that it hasn't been tickled in a long time.)
It contains pages of wonderful inventive gnomes to knit, each with their own charming story. I was
immediately hooked. I looked up the author on Ravelry and, sure enough, there were even MORE gnomes!
This woman has talent up the wazoo! The gnomes have personality plus!

So far, I have knit two gnomes. The patterns are clearly written but are not for the faint of heart. If you try
one, you will learn new stuff, I promise. I am starting out with a plan to knit all the gnomes in the book and
then move on to the Ravelry gnomes. The only real trouble I've had with them is finding an extra pair of hands to help with the crushed walnut shell stuffing so that I don't get it all over the floor, the dogs, the cats and my recliner.

Sarah has a Ravelry group with members trying to knit one gnome a month. It's more fun than a barrel of
kittens. So far, I'm caught up; with only the stuffing left on the gnome with the earflap hat (Gnoddy). If you
decide to try out a gnome, let me Gknow. I'd like to think I inspired someone to try a Gnew thing.

A Note From Trish

One hat and so many possibilities!!

The Norwegian Star hat class has been wonderful. As a teacher, I am really enjoying meeting
members of our guild. There is a lot of talent in our guild!! Our first class was wonderful! We
enjoyed tea and nibbles, and then got busy working on the brim then the colorwork. I quickly discovered that some of us are two handed colorwork knitters and some are one
handed. I can hardly wait to see what they bring to the next class!!
